The San Luis Obispo County Jazz Federation will presented the award winning bassist and composer Marcus Shelby and his Quintet for a special program titled “Homecoming: Blues and the Pursuit of Freedom” on Saturday November 11 at 7:30 pm at Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church in SLO. The San Francisco and New York based quintet presented original compositions and arrangements, music by Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Charles Mingus, poetry, movement, and oratory. Shelby, a proud alumnus of Cal Poly class of 1990, began his professional career in San Luis Obispo during his senior year. Since then, he has recorded 11 albums, appeared in several films, sits on the San Francisco Arts Commission (10 years), and is the current artistic director for Healdsburg Jazz.
