The San Luis Obispo County Jazz Federation was excited to present an all-star septet featuring world-class trombonist Andy Martin on Thursday February 1st. Mr. Martin was joined by local all stars Dave Becker and Ron McCarley (reeds), Bob Bennett (trumpet), Marshall Otwell (piano), Dylan Johnson (bass) and Darrell Voss (drums). Mr. Martin has been a soloist on over 150 major film soundtracks and with numerous big bands. He’s also performed as a sideman with such luminaries as Stanley Turrentine and Horace Silver.
The first set comprised a recreation of the acclaimed 1961 recording “Blues and the Abstract Truth.” This classic album by Oliver Nelson featured unique ensemble arrangements were be performed in their entirety. During the second set, the ensemble played other selections that showcased the talents of these top-flight musicians. The show took place on Thursday, February 1st at Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church in SLO.
